the tension between the genuine cleverness of the joke and the incompetence implied by putting it on two-sentence horror is what makes this for me
Jonathan Harker: Up to now I never quite knew what Shakespeare meant when he made Hamlet say:—
“My tablets! quick, my tablets!
‘Tis meet that I put it down,” etc.,
Shakespeare: When I made Hamlet say what now?
The background of this line is hilarious because apparently it’s only present in Henry Irving’s performances of Hamlet. Stoker just…included them in his novel as if it’s part of the actual text Shakespeare wrote. The novel that is speculated to be Stoker grappling with his infatuation with Irving. It all comes full circle.
Jonathan finishing 12th may with being terrified about Dracula crawling words like a lizard not writing anything for two days and starting 15th may with now describing Dracula going out in lizard fahsion without describing his own fear makes me wonder if for two days he was pondering that and waiting for himself to calm down before he writes anything else and decided he need 100% no emotional description of that climbing like a lizard
i was given a choice between feeling romantic attraction and being funny and now i'm a fucking comedian
